TechShop is (from their website): "TechShop is a fully-equipped open-access workshop and creative environment that lets you drop in any time and work on your own projects at your own pace. It is like a health club with tools and equipment instead of exercise equipment...or a Kinko's for geeks."
TechShop is located in Silicon Valley (Menlo Park) and offers members access to a wide range of tools and equipment for making things including milling machines, lathes, 3-D printers and cad/cam software. They operate like a health club and sell memberships - $100 per month - and offer a wide range of classes.
The target market is DIY hobbyists, inventors and others that want to play with serious toys. It is another example of sophisticated manufacturing technology becoming increasingly available to hobbyists and small businesses. They also look like a coworking facility for people needing manufacturing support.
TechShop hopes to go national via franchising.
