According to a Warrillow survey 41% of small businesses have websites. This is consistent with other surveys and research on small business web usage.
Not surprisingly, Warrillow found that website ownership and number of employees are correlated and firms with more than 5 employees are much more likely to have websites than smaller firms.
A nice reminder that while the vast majority of small businesses use email and browse the web, a lot still do not have their own web sites.

David: The data is not broken down by industry as far as I know.
However in our work on the local web we've noticed that size and the owner's comfort level with technology are the two main drivers of whether or not a local small business has a website.

Interesting stuff. I've worked with several small businesses owners lately, a couple of whom seemed to have a psychological barrier to launching a site. It's too expensive, I'll have to learn to write code, and so on.
I'm curious if these findings are broken down into business categories... I have a feeling that locally-focused businesses (local retailers, restaurants, etc) might make up the lion's share of this group. There's a myth out there that the web isn't useful for businesses that are restricted to small geographic areas.
